Carey Mulligan has landed the role of Daisy Buchanan in The Great Gatsby.
The Wall Street 2 star, 25, beat out Blake Lively and Amanda Seyfried who were also reportedly in the running for the role. The new adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s literary classic will be directed by Baz Luhrmann.
Leonardo DiCaprio will play Jay Gatsby, and Tobey Maguire is expected to play his friend, Nick Carraway, reports Deadline.
Mulligan heard about her casting while on the reception line for The Fashion Council Awards in New York. Luhrmann called her on her cellphone with the news.
“I was thrilled to pick up the phone an hour ago to the young Oscar-nominated British actress Carey Mulligan and say to her: ‘Hello, Daisy Buchanan’, ” he revealed.
Mia Farrow and Robert Redford starred in the 1974 version of The Great Gatsby.
